The folks who serve us in both peace and war deserve our respect and assistance. Nobody is going to argue that.

I've been through a somewhat similiar situation, in that my brother-in-law wanted to fulfill a lifelong dream upon his return from Iraq. He wanted a Sportster when he came back.

Let me set this up a little. He had 2 wives, one previously with two kids of his making and another at the time of his deployment with one child of his doing. The first wife had already flown the coup, deserted the kids, and chose a life of squalor in drug use/sale/etc. Wife #1 had pretty much ruined him already. Enter wife #2, shown up on the scene pretty much after he had put his life back together and was beginning to hold his head up again.

After he's deployed, wife #2 abandons the kids and takes off with yet another drug soaked asshole like wife #1. Wife #2 is so sorry, that she complains to the Army just before her departure about his not sending money back to care for the family. An Army inquiry is sent to her home and immediately gets back to the remaining family about her sorry ass drinking and drugging up the money he's sending.

Believe me, I have jacked this boy up several times about his criteria for women. Moving On.

So, here we have a soldier: in Iraq, facing round #2 of sorry women, initially under heat but vindicated by the Army's own findings, but his children have again been abandoned - this time while he's half a world away. Just how would that make any of us feel?

We take his kids, control of his hazard pay, and set the teeth of the law against BOTH women. Wife #1 attempts to capitalize on his absence and regain the kids - by no means clean or sober. We get his payments straightened out and in order back home, budget his pay, and discover that the Sportster could actually happen.

My wife beat the bushes, and found a basket case Sporty worth the money. Work began. We worked frugally within the money available and only cast a narrow net for any help we needed. Kept it close and within the community that knew the soldier. Really all we got was some help on the cost of the parts from the local Harley shop - believe it or not. Even they still made money, but did cut the margin down.

Right down to the wire, with the new tires only being put on the morning the soldier was to arrive later the same day. But, we made it with a big ol' yellow ribbon on it when he came off the bus.

Moral of the story. I don't believe this is something that you have to appeal to the internet to accomplish. If the cause is worthy, you should be able to find enough help from people you already know or the actual community you are in to get the job done. Nothing like this should be overly burdensome to anyone to accomplish. If things are right, help will come.

Don't anyone forget, the bulk of the money used was this guy's own pay over and above his expenses - and we donated the labor and sheltered his kids until he could get back. I in no way consider my contribution to have been overly burdensome on us at the time.

I absolutely detest those who go about looking for freebies and use opportunity to scam. Particularly in the case of military situation. That makes it even tougher on someone who has the best thought at heart and is trying to manage a tough situation. I'm not saying this request is bogus or legitimate, I am saying that an appeal to the internet causes one to wonder. It's do-able otherwise. We have all been scammed to freakin' death, and such a widely thrown appeal surely does not register with folks so well. Mainly because it stinks of those scammers who have gone on before.

If this is a legit cause, my advice is to keep the net tight and low. Keep the appeal amongst those folks who will be able to see the fruits of their kindness and see it often. Everyone in the equation appeciates that and can be reminded of their efforts often and feel good about it.

Hud, Props to you for what you did. I totally agree about keeping the net "tight and low". It's like walking into a titty bar - you know they all want a hand out, but you can only afford to send one of them back to college ;)

Hudsonator, personally I think asking for a handout on the internet is crass but many do it and I can live with that ... but the act of Johnny Garner (TxGasser) claiming to be a VietNam prisoner of war and posting that creditional as his sig (which he has since removed) in order to play on the hearts of people there-by prompting them to help him make a financial gain is morally wrong on all parts .... many people were duped by this clown all over the internet.

The agency that validates , with 100% accruacy, that Johnny Garner is a lying dog has also requested his military records to see if he even served ..... they have no record of this individual even serving in Viet Nam ... let alone being a ex-POW.

Visit the site and scroll down to Johnny Garners name ... http://www.pownetwork.org/phonies/phonies1012.htm

I assume we all come to these site to talk cars, womiens, and etc. We do so out of joy and to relieve other stresses in our life .... nobody needs a guy like TxGasser to show his dishonest face and put a dark cloud over ANY site which is designed specifically for good entertainment.

As with you, we all have a story to tell, Johnny Garner's is just a fabrication.
